The meeting earlier this week is the first time Cowell has seen his 88-year-old mum for several months and friends say holding Eric was “the final piece in the puzzle” for Julie as she now feels her family is complete.
In a 2009 interview, Julie admitted Simon told her he didn’t want kids and she “couldn’t talk him round”.
But now Cowell, 54, and partner Lauren Silverman have a family and Julie was thrilled when they visited her home with their son.
A source close to Cowell said: “It was a lovely visit from Simon and Lauren and Julie was thrilled.
“There were some very emotional moments when she got to hold and touch Eric and his name is obviously very poignant for Julie as her husband Eric died in 1999.”
The Mirror can also reveal baby Eric now has a new role in X Factor musical I Can’t Sing.
Eric – or rather a body double – will appear on stage at the London Palladium.
The script has been edited this week to now include a showbiz debut for Eric and the Simon Cowell character appears on stage holding a baby.
Cowell’s son Eric born on February 14 but in an interview on Thursday he again insisted he would not be embracing all aspects of parenthood.
He said: “I feed Eric, I talk to him and play with him, but I don’t think dads do changing nappies. I’ll leave that up to the nanny.”
Speaking on Sky News Cowell also praised Prime Minister David Cameron, describing him as a “decent guy” who “cares passionately about the country”.
Four years ago Cowell described Mr Cameron as “the Prime Minister Britain needs” on the eve of the general election.
Despite struggling to win over the majority of public support since then, the X Factor boss is still very much a fan.
Cowell said: “I like David. I think he’s a decent guy and I like his wife, she is a really nice person. He cares passionately about this country.”
He went on to tell Sky News that there’s “not enough money” to pay the Prime Minister to join the judging panel, adding: “He’d be terrible at judging talent like that.”
Musical I Can’t Sing will open at the London Palladium on March 26, but has had problems in preview performances this week, with one performance having the second half cancelled completely because of electrical problems.
Asked about a number of early teething problems for the musical, he added: “If it was the other way round, if was all working perfectly but the show was rubbish, then we’d have a real problem.”
He insisted he was “99.999 percent sure” the opening night would go ahead smoothly.
