The singer is set to stay with his eldest daughter Karis at her home close to the Hollywood Hills as he battles to come to terms with the former model’s suicide.
Daughters Elizabeth, 30, and Georgia May, 22, are also with him for support, with Jade, 42, and her son James, 27, set to join them imminently.
“Mick, like with all of his children, is extremely close to Karis,” said a source.
“She has been a huge source of comfort to him and she insisted he must stay with her and her two children - Mick’s grandkids.
“It is extremely difficult for him to travel to New York. It is still far too raw.
“Mick is still in complete shock and cannot understand or comprehend why L’Wren took her own life.”
The Rolling Stone, along with his bandmates, flew in to LA touching down shortly after 7.30am.
Unlike Mick’s other children, Karis has always shunned the public spotlight.
She was the father-of-seven’s first child born in 1970 although he didn’t play an active role in her life until she was nine-years-old.
The relationship between Jagger and Karis’s mum, American model Marsha Hunt, had broken down before she was born in Paddington, London.
For several years Jagger failed to acknowledge his daughter publicly until Marsha, who is said to have inspired the song “Brown Sugar”, took the singer to court for child support.
In 1979 he was ordered to pay £1,000 per month towards looking after Karis however the case also instigated Jagger taking an active role in his daughter’s life.
So when, at the age 22, she graduated from Yale with a history degree, Jagger and then wife Jerry Hall joined Marsha at the graduation.
He was seen smiling proudly while filming Karis receiving her certificate.
She is Jagger’s only daughter not to enter modelling choosing instead to become a film production assistant.
Karis, 43, has also volunteered as a teacher in Harlem before marrying her husband Jonathan Watson 14 years ago.
Jagger’s daughter to Hall, Georgia May, 22, previously said of her half sister: “Karis is like the star of the family because she went to Yale.”
The Stones took off from Perth on Thursday after cancelling a set of shows in Australia and New Zealand following L’Wren’s shocking suicide on Monday in New York.
The legendary rockers - accompanied by a police escort - drove straight onto to the tarmac and quickly boarded their Boeing 767 private jet emblazoned with their famous tongue logo.
Friends have said the timing of L’Wren’s death was particularly tragic after more than 50 years on the road Jagger was finally ready to settle down.
He had already been with the fashion designer longer than he had been married to either of his wives
“Mick had recently decided to end his hotel lifestyle, and I understand they had just bought a $10 million home in New York,” Rob Shane, the husband of Scott’s sister Jan said.
Meanwhile today bandmate Ronnie Wood posted a message on his website paying tribute, as well as offering his support for close friendMick Jagger.
It read: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Mick and L'Wren's family and friends at this incredibly devastating and difficult time.
"As a band we are one big family and we've all come together to support Mick, and will do everything we can to help him.
"We are currently rescheduling touring plans. We thank everyone for their understanding.
"We are so grateful for the messages of support at this sad time - while we take the time that is needed. XR ."
