The incidents occurred at the Jettie S. Tisdale school in Bridgeport, Conn., in early 2012, but the footage has just gone public.
According to reports, the Bridgeport school superintendent recommended the firing of principal Carmen Perez Dickson, but following an investigation the Board of Ed in October 2013 by a 4-3 vote decided to suspend her for six months without pay instead. She is due back to work next month, but will be assigned to a different school or in an administrative capacity.
Bridgeport school system administrator Sandra Kase explained that “The board did not exactly agree with us, so the action that was taken was not what we recommended. If I saw the same evidence and saw the same video today, we’d support the same recommendation we made at the time.”
A mom of one of the five-year-olds who was allegedly dragged down the hallway by the principal revealed that “She only found out about the March 2012 incident after a worker with the Department of Children and Families told her months after it happened.”
Perez Dickson’s lawyer said that the principal, a 35-year Bridgeport school district employee, maintains “that she acted within school policy by using reasonable force when necessary when handling student issues.” The lawyer apparently wants to find out how the confidential video surfaced in the media.
According to one of the Board of Ed members who voted to fire the principal, “Children go to school to learn and to be respected and we are an example. And if we start to bully, then we can’t expect much from these children. They will learn to bully others.”
